A los Amigos vol. 7

29 August – 1 September 2019

Loading…stay tuned

The Rethymno International Tango Festival “A Los Amigos” was a lifetime dream come true. The vibrant tango community of Rethymno, but also the entire tango community of Crete, a place in the periphery of Greece and Europe, opened up in a big embrace and founded A LOS AMIGOS in 2013, an event that aims at maintaining the essence of Τango. The cast of A los Amigos has always been filled with artists who we respect a lot for their contribution in the growth of tango, but with whom also a close friendship has been established over the years. This festival was conceived as a true celebration of Tango & Friendship and it has been growing every year more and more thanks to the love of the people who visit it and the help of our volunteers and our sponsors. We just love what we do and we hope to welcome you, too, in our embrace and make you testimony of the magic around A LOS AMIGOS.

S. Galanaki & The Amigos Team

Chicho & Juana

A couple that needs no particular presentation: we have the great honour to welcome back to Greece, for the fourth time in our festival, two living myths of Tango, masters of masters, Chicho & Juana! Musicality and Improvisation at its best. Dynamics and Sensitivity. Technical purity and Communication. Absolute perfection and true Poetry in motion. Their dance brings tears in our eyes!

Due to her pregnancy and the birth of her daughter Juana will not be joining us this year.

Chicho will be teaching and performing with an exquisite dancer instead: Laura Elizondo (Arg).

The women technique class of Saturday 1/9 will be dictated by Chicho himself.

El Peque & Mariela

Fresh, innovative, musical, playful, ironic and with a great sense of humour, Guille & Mariela are a true joy to watch. Their technical background and teaching skills have made them one of the most beloved couples worldwide. Speed, precision, fantasy and amazing musicality characterise their dance. Whoever met them last year, fell in love with them, and so will you as soon as you meet them!

Federico & Sabrina

Despite their young age, they both have had a huge career in tango before meeting each other. Together they form a unique couple representing one of the most iconic styles of Buenos Aires, with a strong foot on tradition and an other one on innovation. We are happy to welcome them to our festival and present them for the first time in Greece. Federico & Sabrina are as impressive in their show as they are in their lessons, too. And they will enchant you with their personalities.

Octavio & Soledad

A new couple that is shaking the waters of the tango scene, Octavio & Soledad are the new scoop of our festival! Their style is characterised by extreme musicality, sharp, and expressive movements, combining the traditional with the modern, grounded and ethereal at the same time. Octavio’s vast knowledge of the music matches perfectly Sole’s technical skills (she is a pro in lindy hop, too..). In one word: jaw-dropping!

Theodore Georgedakis

Owner of Tangart (Athens) and dj in major events around Europe, Theodore has promised to make us burn the floor in our opening milonga this year!

Nikitas Michelakis

Nikitas is one of the best cretan djs, travelling a lot and working in marathons and festivals all over Europe. He loves to see the ronda moving and the dance floor full, so be ready to dance all night long on Friday.

Marcelo Rojas

Voted BEST DJ of the year and official dj of the radio station La 2×4 in Argentina. His 20 year experience, his philosophy and his voice on the microphone transform each milonga into a unique experience. Marcelo will be dj-ing in our Gala milonga on Saturday, and he will be sharing his vast knowledge with us on a special music workshop for djs & dancers on Sunday. Don’t miss him!

Octavio Fernandez

Organiser of El Yeite, one of the most successful practicas of Buenos Aires, Octavio has a huge experience dj-ing in milongas around the world. He has a double role in our festival, not only is he a maestro but he will also make us rock during the closing milonga on Sunday night.

Please note:

What is the difference between a SEMINAR and “normal” WORKSHOPS?
• The SEMINAR is a block of 3 lessons (Friday/Saturday/Sunday) with the same subject and a continuation from the first to the third day. A SEMINAR aims at deepening into the subject of work. Registration is possible ONLY in COUPLE for ADVANCED LEVEL dancers. The price is per person and regards the block of 3 lessons (it cannot be booked as single classes eg only Friday).
• The WORKSHOPS are unities that can be booked separately (the more workshops you book, the bigger the discount). WORKSHOPS can be booked by SINGLE participants OR IN COUPLE.
• Single participants (leaders or followers) are welcome. We will do our best to match up single registrations according to the level you sign up to, but of course it is NOT A GUARANTEED Service. Please check our FIND A PARTNER section before you register.
• We are doing our best to keep all workshops balanced, so some of them maybe temporarily unavailable for either role (leaders or followers). Thank you for your understanding. If a workshop you wish to attend is full please complete your registration without it and contact us if you wish to be on a waiting list.
It is always better to sign up with a partner to make sure you have THE ONE you wish to work with during classes. So study the lessons’ timetable and let the fun begin!

Location: Rethymno

The city of Rethymno is considered one of the most beautiful cities of Crete and Greece in general. Long beaches and a picturesque old town are its main characteristics. You can take a walk along the seaside or get carried away in the meanders of the old town, admiring the architecture which is a mixture of the Greek-Venetian and Turkish civilizations that are tangled up after centuries of co-existence. The Archaeological museum, the Venetian castle “Fortezza” and the minarets in the old town are some of the points of interest really worthwhile visiting among your breaks! Or just relax under the sun in one of the wonderful beaches around Rethymno. Here are some useful links to get an idea:

  • To Crete

By plane: Rethymno is situated between the two biggest cities of Crete and has no airport. It is 78 km from  Heraklion (or Iraclio, the capital of the island), and 65 km away from Chania (or Hania). In order to reach Crete (and then Rethymno) you can fly directly to the airports of Heraklion (http://www.heraklion-airport.info/) or Chania (http://www.chania-airport.com/). All major airlines as well as low cost companies and charters fly both to both airports. Especially during the summer you can find direct flights from all over Europe. Ryanair flies to Chania and Easyjet, Volotea, Airberlin, Vueling to Heraklion, both of them with direct flights from many European cities. Aegean airlines is the Greek company that also serves the island with inland and international flights. If you do not find a direct/charter flight, you can always choose to fly to Athens (https://www.aia.gr/traveler/) and then reach Crete either by air (Aegean Airlines & Ryanair fly daily to Heraklion and Chania) or

By sea: with the ferry from the port of Piraeus  (ANEK and MINOAN lines travel daily to Crete, to the ports of Heraklion and Chania).

  • To Rethymno

From the airport: you can come to Rethymno by taxi (you can find one directly at the airport, 1 h drive, 69-78 euros), bus (1h 15 min from the central bus station, buses depart every hour, ticket around 7 euros) or rented car (approx. 1 h drive, there are various car rental companies outside the airport).  The central bus station in both cities is located in the city centre, so to arrive there from the airport you need to take a taxi (10 minutes drive, the fare around 10 euros) or a city bus (20 minutes drive, around 2 euros) and then take the bus to Rethymno.
