The Rethymno International Tango Festival “A Los Amigos” was a lifetime dream come true. The vibrant tango community of Rethymno, but also the entire tango community of Crete, a place in the periphery of Greece and Europe, opened up in a big embrace and founded A LOS AMIGOS in 2013, an event that aims at maintaining the essence of Τango. The cast of A los Amigos has always been filled with artists who we respect a lot for their contribution in the growth of tango, but with whom also a close friendship has been established over the years. This festival was conceived as a true celebration of Tango & Friendship and it has been growing every year more and more thanks to the love of the people who visit it and the help of our volunteers and our sponsors. We just love what we do and we hope to welcome you, too, in our embrace and make you testimony of the magic around A LOS AMIGOS.
S. Galanaki & The Amigos Team
There can be no “Amigos” without them!
We have the great honour to welcome back in our festival, two living myths of Tango, masters of masters, the amazing Mariano CHICHO Frúmboli & JUANA Sepulveda!
Musicality and Improvisation at its best. Dynamics and Sensitivity. Technical purity and Communication. Absolute perfection and true Poetry in motion. Their dance brings tears in our eyes!
Acclaimed Master Teacher & awarded Outstanding Personality of Culture, due to his distinctive approach to the dance with more than 30 years of teaching and dancing experience, always in the vanguard of tango and of course in the leading role for the big change that took place in the ’90s through the investigation group he founded. Teacher, dancer, choreographer, organiser of CITA, FLORITANGO & PREMIOS together with his ultra-talented and charismatic partner in tango and life, ladies & gentlemen, with immense pleasure we present to you two myths of tango: FABIAN Salas & LOLA Diaz.
A legndary couple of dancers with a very long history behind them!
Both acclaimed maestros & dancers, he is the icon of tango and she is a goddess made in heaven!
Together they produce amazing sensations and images on the dance floor!
Puro Tango at its best: JAVIER RODRIGUEZ – MOIRA CASTELLANO.
Pure Emotion!
The final addition to our cast this year, a couple that needs no particular presentation:
With a style that identifies them for their musicality and virtuosity, ARIADNA Naveira and FERNANDO Sanchez know how to combine the essential tools of tango with the inherent feel of the embrace. In a very short time they have been able to complement each other in a harmonious dance that mixes the viewpoint of a modern Tango with the essence of Tango, also making of their teaching a tool to spread their love of the dance in all of its expressions. Ariadna and Fernando are simply Tango!
Wishing to provide you with A GENUINE TASTE OF CRETE and make this festival an even richer experience, we are offering TO YOU an alternative activity:
A visit to one of the most beautiful gorges (YES, Crete is not famous only for its beaches, but for its mountains, too!), that of PATSOS in the region of AMARI VALLEY (also called “SAN ANTONIO’S” gorge, because of the old church built inside the rocks, on the ancient ruins of the temple of Hermes Kranaios).
And then…lunch at the taverna “Drymos” one of the most typical of the region!
Taste local dishes, eat delicious local meat cooked traditionally around the fire (“Antikristo”), dance with us and enjoy the beauty of Amari valley, one of the richest and most spectacular of the island!
In short: EXPERIENCE TRUE CRETE!

The city
The city of Rethymno is considered one of the most beautiful cities of Crete and Greece in general. Long beaches and a picturesque old town are its main characteristics. You can take a walk along the seaside or get carried away in the meanders of the old town, admiring the architecture which is a mixture of the Greek-Venetian and Turkish civilizations that are tangled up after centuries of co-existence. The Archaeological museum, the Venetian castle “Fortezza” and the minarets in the old town are some of the points of interest really worthwhile visiting among your breaks! Or just relax under the sun in one of the wonderful beaches around Rethymno. Here are some useful links to get an idea:

By plane: Rethymno is situated between the two biggest cities of Crete and has no airport. It is 78 km from Heraklion (or Iraclio, the capital of the island), and 65 km away from Chania (or Hania). In order to reach Crete (and then Rethymno) you can fly directly to the airports of Heraklion (http://www.heraklion-airport.info/) or Chania (http://www.chania-airport.com/). All major airlines as well as low cost companies and charters fly both to both airports. Especially during the summer you can find direct flights from all over Europe. Ryanair flies to Chania and Easyjet, Volotea, Airberlin, Vueling to Heraklion, both of them with direct flights from many European cities. Aegean airlines is the Greek company that also serves the island with inland and international flights. If you do not find a direct/charter flight, you can always choose to fly to Athens (https://www.aia.gr/traveler/) and then reach Crete either by air (Aegean Airlines & Ryanair fly daily to Heraklion and Chania) or
By sea: with the ferry from the port of Piraeus (ANEK and MINOAN lines travel daily to Crete, to the ports of Heraklion and Chania).
From the airport: you can come to Rethymno by taxi (you can find one directly at the airport, 1 h drive, 70-80€), bus (1h 15 min from the central bus station, buses depart every hour, ticket around 7€) or rented car (approx. 1 h drive, there are various car rental companies outside the airport). The central bus station in both cities is located in the city centre, so to arrive there from the airport you need to take a taxi (10 minutes drive, the fare around 10€) or a city bus (20 minutes drive, around 2€) and then take the bus to Rethymno.
